Dr. Cathérine Van de Graaf

Dr. Van de Graaf absolvierte ihren Bachelor und Master of Laws an der Universität Antwerpen (2014) sowie einen LLM in internationalem Menschenrechtsrecht an der Universität Lund und dem Raoul Wallenberg Institut (2017). Sie war Junior Associate bei Xirius Advocaten, wo ihre Aufgaben vor allem im Schreiben von Anträgen und der Vorbereitung von Fällen in verschiedenen verfassungsrechtlichen Angelegenheiten bestanden.

Ihre Doktorarbeit hat sie am Menschenrechtszentrum der Universität Gent unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Eva Brems durchgeführt. In diesem Zusammenhang führte sie empirische Rechtsforschung mit den Schwerpunkten Verfahrensrechtstheorie, wahrgenommene Diskriminierung und Islamophobie durch, die zu Veröffentlichungen im Journal of Legal Pluralism and Unofficial Law, dem International Journal of Discrimination and the Law, Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights und Islamophobia Studies Journal führte.

Im Mai 2021 wechselte Dr. Van de Graaf in das Team von Prof. Dr. Angelika Nußberger an der Universität zu Köln, wo sie ihre Forschung zu verschiedenen Themen des Menschenrechtsschutzes fortsetzt und am Aufbau der Akademie für Europäischen Menschenrechtsschutz mitwirkt.

Im Jahr 2022 erhielt Cathérine ein Stipendium der Volkswagenstiftung für das gemeinsames Projekt "Who is the Court for? Bringing the Human back into Human Rights Research", in dem sie sich auf die empirische Erfassung von Menschenrechtsverläufen vor dem Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte konzentriert.

Im Rahmen des Human Rights Action Teams der Universität Gent trägt sie regelmäßig zu Drittpartei-Interventionen vor dem EGMR bei. Darüber hinaus betreut sie das Team der Universität zu Köln beim Helga Pedersen Mootcourt Wettbewerb und ist Co-Dozentin von Prof. Dr. Eva Brems für den Kurs "The European Convention on Human Rights: Theory and Practice" an der Universität Gent. Sie ist Mitglied der Open Council of Europe Academic Networks (OCEAN), des Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law (BCCE), des Human Rights Centre (HRC), der International Islamophobia Studies and Research Association (ISSRA) und der Vereniging voor de sociaal-wetenschappelijk studie van het recht (VSR).
